Laverle H. Westerman

Died: 7/1/2014

Laverle H. Westerman, age 96, of Evans City, passed peacefully Tuesday morning, July 1, 2014, at St. John's LAS, Mars, PA.

Born March 19, 1918, in Evans City, PA, he was the Son of the late Phillip and Grace Rider Westerman.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ of Evans City, PA.

He graduated from, Evans City High School in 1936. He retired from L.T.V. Steel as a ladle crane operator, with 30 plus years. He served in the United States Army Air Force during WW II. He flew missions from Iwo-Jima, and Siapan. He was stationed on Iwo-Jima when WW II ended. His main mission was a Radio operator during the war on the B-17 Bombers and Tail Gunner. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Campaign medal with 4 bronze stars, and the air medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 219, for 70 years.

He enjoyed Fishing after retirement, and reading.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Waldron Westerman January 1, 1969, one-step grandson Troy Barkley, one sister Mary Meeder, and five brothers Ken, Don, Harold, Frank, Ray.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly 'Betty' M. Walker Stach Westerman, whom he married October 3, 1970, one daughter Patricia Thomas, Warren PA, 2 Step sons, Dennis (Blanche) Stach, Slippery Rock, Alfred (Nancy) Stach, E.C. 1 step daughter Beverly (Troy) Barkley Evans City 1 brother, Loyal (Genevieve) Westerman, Bother-in-law- Roland Meeder Cranberry Twp., 2 grandsons Kevin (Faith) and Marc (Jodie) Thomas I step granddaughter Marilee (Zac) Bender, and 4 great grandsons, Nicholas, Alex, Michael, and Paul Thomas, 2 Step grandson Scott (Tara) Barkley, Dwayne Stach, and also nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives of Laverle H. Westerman, who passed away Tuesday July 1, 2014, will be received on Sunday July 7, 2014, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 P.M., at the Kinsey-Volz F.H. 328 West Main St., E.C. Pa 16033. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 A.M. from the Funeral Home. Burial will take place with full military honors, at B.C.M.P.

The family has suggested memorial donations be made to a Veterans Affiliated Service.
